Black Hawks end 2018 with a shut-out...

MONDAY VS. MADISON

Jared Moe made 32 saves to lead the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 4-0 New Year’s Eve win versus the Madison Capitols Monday at Young Arena. It was the first time this season that Waterloo has blanked an opponent. For Moe, it was the third shutout of his USHL career.

Waterloo took full advantage of a five-on-three power play beginning at 7:19. Joe Cassetti redirected a shot from the slot past Joey Lamoreaux. Just 27 seconds later, Waterloo was still on the power play when James Marooney beat Lamoreaux but hit the post. Solag Bakich swooped in to knock the rebound across the goal line.

Bakich struck again on Waterloo’s third power play, flipping in a difficult spinning backhander in transition at 18:58.

Cassetti’s second score of the night brought forth one last cheer with 0.1 seconds to go. Swiping a pass just outside the Madison blue line, he fired it into a Capitols goal which had been vacant for over two minutes.

The Waterloo Black Hawks picked up their fifth consecutive home win Saturday by edging the Youngstown Phantoms 4-3 at Young Arena.

The Black Hawks turned a rare four-on-three power play into a goal at 1:18. Matej Blumel setup a Hank Sorensen one-timer from the left wing circle.

Two goals in a 35-second span turned the second period in the Black Hawks’ favor beginning at 2:03. Wyatt Schingoethe took a couple of whacks at a Jacob Bengtsson rebound to knock the puck across the goal line and bump Waterloo into the lead. Matej Blumel followed up in transition on the next shift, putting the puck by the goalie from the right circle, off a feed from Emil Ohrvall.

Mason Palmer added another at 12:37. Palmer swatted at the loose puck to keep it away from an on-coming Phantom, and ended up batting it into an open goal before the goalie could re-establish himself in the crease. That goal proved to be the winner due to a third period Youngstown rally. Logan Stein stopped 29 shots for the win.

BLACK HAWKS IN 3RD PLACE
Waterloo sits in 3rd place in the Western Conference standings, just 3 points behind 1st place Tri-City, and 1 point behind 2nd place Des Moines.

The Black Hawks start the month of January in Sioux Falls on Friday. They then return home Saturday to host the Lincoln Stars for "Star Wars Night". For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
