There is one former Division I basketball player that made the switch to football and had a successful career in the pros, at least that I can think of off the top of my head.

As a Los Angeles Chargers fan, it's pretty easy, but you may not remember the name as quickly as I do -- Antonio Gates (of course there are guys who played both sports like Tony Gonzalez and Julius Peppers, but Gates is the lone guy I remember who went from strictly college basketball to the NFL).

Gates was an absolute monster on the field for the then-San Diego Chargers. The combination of him and running back LaDainian Tomlinson was damn near impossible to defend in the mid to late 2000s.

One former Iowa State basketball starter has a shot to be the next guy to make the successful basketball to football switch.

Michael Jacobson, who played for the Cyclones during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, averaged 9.5 points and 5.9 rebounds over his two years in Ames as a starter.

Following his tenure at Iowa State, the Waukee native played one year of professional basketball in the Ukraine Super League. Then he decided to give the NFL a try and signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in August of 2021.

After being released by the Seahawks practice squad in September 2021, he then signed with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad in October of the same year. He's remained with the team since, and on Saturday, the time spent transitioning to football was made worth it.

In the Colts' inaugural game of the 2022 NFL preseason, Jacobson was targeted twice and caught one pass, a 12-yard touchdown from backup quarterback and former Texas star, Sam Ehlinger.

Despite Jacobson's efforts, Indianapolis fell to the Buffalo Bills, 27-24 on Saturday evening.

The last time the former Cyclone basketball starter played in a football game was in 2014 for Waukee High School.
