When I started this job a little under a year ago, I, and everyone else here, knew that one of my go-to choices for articles would be about sports, specifically Northern Iowa Athletics. I'd like to think that I've built that into something, growing to being a UNI Insider for Townsquare Media and hosting Cornstalks and Sports Talk (which is available as a podcast twice a week now, by the way).

As I've continued writing, a few other things have become my schtick, so to speak. I've written quite a bit about the legalization of marijuana in Iowa, big drug busts, and now -- more recently added to the list -- the infamous Ottumwa man. Er, woman. Sometimes woman.

That schtick has gotten a little more momentum today.

As reported by WHO13, Mindy Cordray of Ottumwa was arrested after local law enforcement obtained a warrant and searched her home for drug paraphernalia. The news site says that "During the search, Ottumwa police officers along with officers from the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the drug task force discovered methamphetamine, marijuana, and pharmaceutical medications. The drugs were in quantities that appeared high enough for distribution."

She's now being charged with the following:

  • possession with the intent to deliver more than 5 grams of methamphetamine
  • possession with the intent to deliver marijuana
  • possession with the intent to deliver a Schedule IV drug (Alprazolam)
  • possession of a Schedule II and IV controlled substances

Now, this is where the story gets real Ottumwa-y.

Court documents revealed that Cordray possessed all of the aforementioned drugs within 1,000 feet of an elementary school. Douma Elementary School to be exact. And thus, her charges were enhanced.

She is currently being held at Wapello County Jail on a $30,300 bond.
