When it comes to Iowa's best public schools, a website called Niche looked into seemingly every public school in the country and broke down the best by each state.

So, who came out on top in Iowa?

How the Best Public High Schools Were Determined

In order to rank each school, not just here in Iowa, but nationwide, Niche used some basic metrics.

The site didn't just go solely on academics, though that was a key factor. They actually used several metrics:

1. Academics (60%)

• This is the biggest factor: state test scores, college enrollment rates, and academic surveys from students and parents are combined.

2. Culture & Diversity (12.5%)

• Measures racial and economic diversity alongside survey feedback on school climate.

3. Student/Parent Experience (10%)

• Ratings from surveys about overall school experience, on a 1-to-5 scale.

4. Teachers (10%)

• Includes teacher salaries, absentee rates, test performance by teachers, and survey responses.

5. Extras (2.5% each)

• Clubs & Activities: Spending per student + survey reviews

• Facilities & Resources: Budget, staff, and facility feedback

• Sports: Variety of sports, participation rates, and sport-related surveys

All public school traditional, charter, and magnet, were ranked.

Iowa's Top Public High Schools

In the study, with the top 30 public high schools in Iowa shown below, Iowa City, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Cedar Falls are all well represented.

In fact, one of those cities is home to the number one public high school in Iowa.
