An Oelwein man has been arrested on drug trafficking charges following an investigation involving local, state and federal authorities.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa, 54-year-old David Tafolla was taken into custody last week. Officials charged Tafolla with one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, four counts of distribution of a controlled substance and one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

The charges were contained in an in Indictment that was unsealed Aug. 16 in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. The Indictment alleges that Tafolla was involved in drug trafficking for at least seven months.

Tafolla is accused of conspiring with others to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, and 50 grams or more of actual (pure) methamphetamine between Oct. 2020 and May 2021.

The Indictment also alleges that Tafolla distributed 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine on April 26 and May 24. Authorities believe Tafolla distributed five grams or more of actual methamphetamine on April 21 and May 4, according to the Indictment, which alleges that Tafolla possessed with the intent to deliver 50 grams or more of pure meth on May 24.

Tafolla is being held without bond. His trial is set of Oct. 18.

If convicted on all charges, Tafolla faces a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence and a possible maximum life prison sentence without the possibility of parole. He could also be fined $10 million.
