A Popular Eatery at NewBo City Market Has Closed
The next time you visit NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids, you may notice a new empty booth. According to a recent post on social media, Grandma's Root Cellar has officially closed down.
Earlier this month, a post went up on the Grandma's Root Cellar Facebook page that revealed to customers that the eatery would be closing at the end of September. The last day in business was this past Sunday, September 24th.
Grandma's Root Cellar first opened at NewBo in June of 2021 and is owned and operated by Kellie Kesselring, aka "Chef Mama K." According to the website:
"From an early age, she became interested in cooking and entertaining, watching her great-grandmother and grandmother cook Sunday dinners. Summers and Fall were spent helping preserve the season's garden harvest, then stored in the root cellar for use throughout the cold Iowa winters."
When it comes to food, Chef Mama K's philosophy is, "if it goes in a jar, we probably make it." Specialties include jams, fermented foods like cucumber pickles and hot sauce, baked goods, and vegan soups, wraps, sandwiches, and more.
Although the eatery is no longer operating at NewBo City Market, Grandma's Root Cellar is still offering catering. And, it sounds like Chef Mama K has something else in the works! Recent Facebook posts say things like, "the next chapter of the adventure is just waiting to be written, so stay tuned..." and "goodbye (for now)." We will be sure to keep you informed of any updates on the business!
