Cedar Falls Cancels School Ahead of Massive Winter Storm
As students and teachers head into winter break, there's a lot of excitement in the air. A couple of weeks off from school, a chance to see family for the holidays, and for those young enough, time to play in the snow, if there is any.
Well, in 2022 there will be snow. Lots of it. As we reported, a massive winter storm will impact the entire state beginning Wednesday. Its effects are likely to stretch through Saturday morning. This will make travel very difficult and dangerous.
You can expect to see hundreds of flights nationwide get canceled as a result. but flights and trips won't be the only thing that gets scrapped.
Due to the pending storm, Cedar Falls canceled school on December 22. That means all students will get to start winter break one day early.
Waterloo's winter break was already set to begin on Thursday, so students will not be impacted by the storm. The same goes for Oelwein, which was not previously scheduled to hold classes on Thursday.
Other schools that were scheduled to have class but choose to cancel like Cedar Falls include:
- Grundy Center Community Schools
- AGWSR
- Gladbrook-Reinbeck
- Union Community School District
- Lone Tree Community School District
- Sumner-Fredericksburg
All have announced they will not have classes to avoid putting students and faculty at risk of impact by the storm.
There will likely be many, many more cancelations. Not just for schools or flights, but businesses and events that will have to be moved, or scrapped altogether. if you have to travel, make sure you have a winter travel kit.
This should include a tow rope, a flashlight (batteries included, or your cell phone), a car phone charger, a collapsible shovel, an ice scraper, a blanket, gloves, and hand wipes.
Be safe.
