Colorado Driver Switched Seats With Dog To Avoid DUI

A driver in Colorado tried to get out of a sure-to-be arrest by switching seats with his dog, which is almost as much an admission of guilt as saying "Yeah, I'm drunk."

The man, who police with the Springfield Police Department Colorado didn't name, was pulled over by officials around 11:30pm Saturday night for driving 52-mph in a 30-mph zone.

“The driver attempted to switch places with his dog who was in the passenger seat, as the SPD officer approached and watched the entire process,” the Springfield Police Department said. “The male party then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving.”

Unsurprisingly, the man appeared intoxicated, and when the officer asked him if he'd been drinking, the man bolted, but was tackled and apprehended just 20 yards away from the vehicle.

He had to be taken to a hospital to be checked out to make sure he was in the clear, then booked into the Baca County Jail. His charges include driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, speeding and resisting arrest, police said.

"It was discovered that the male was driving from Las Animas to Pueblo and got lost in Springfield. The male party was also found to have two active warrants for his arrest out of Pueblo," officials said.

The dog was handed over to a friend of the driver to be cared for while his owner was in jail. “The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning," the police clarified in their post.
