Hit and Run, Plus High Speed Chase, Puts Man in Prison

A Manchester man, who led law enforcement on a chase after a hit and run accident with a pedestrian, has been sentenced to prison.

30 year old Kevin Krapfl Jr. was sentenced in Buchanan County District Court on Thursday (Sept. 24), to 10 years in prison. He pleaded guilty on Tuesday to numerous charges.

The incident happened April 18th, when a conservation officer tried to stop Krapfl's vehicle in rural Fayette County following a hit and run report in Oelwein.
Krapfl sped off, leading law enforcement on a high speed chase through rural Fayette and Buchanan Counties.

The chase ended when Krapfl's car collided with a patrol vehicle driven by Buchanan County deputy Dan Walter. The deputy was seriously injured. Krapfl fled on foot but was caught a short time later in a nearby corn field.

An investigation determined that Krapfl was under the influence of meth and marijuana. A search of his vehicle turned up numerous items pertaining to illegal substances.

Krapfl pleaded guilty on Tuesday (Sept. 22) to numerous charges: Serious Injury by Vehicle, Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Injury, Operating While Intoxicated Third or Subsequent Offense, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without an Approved Ignition Interlock Device, Operating a Motor Vehicle While License Suspended or Revoked, Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle, Failure to Obey Official Traffic Control Device and Speeding.

Along with the 10 year sentence, he must also pay restitution to the victims, go through a substance abuse evaluation, complete a course for drunk drivers, and his driver's license is revoked for 6 years.
