After three years of trying to settle a dispute with contractors for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, the University has now filed a lawsuit.

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital opened in Iowa City in 2017. Two years later, the University began to notice issues with more than 900 windows that were installed by a pair of contractors.

According to the University of Iowa, "immediate actions took place to mitigate any potential safety risks, including the installation of protective film and clips to secure the windows. With these proactive safety measures in place, there is no risk posed to patients, employees, visitors, or the public. No one has been injured, and the windows will continue to be monitored and secured."

Long story short, the University of Iowa says those windows will need to be replaced. Since 2019, the University has attempted to work on a resolution with the two contractors who installed the windows. After those efforts proved unsuccessful, a lawsuit was filed on Friday. The Gazette says the amount of money sought by the University of Iowa has not been revealed.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics interim CEO and chief nursing executive Kimberly Hunter said,

"The construction of the children’s hospital was an investment in Iowa and we relied on and paid contractors to deliver a high-quality product. Unfortunately, the contractors have not accepted responsibility for replacing the defective windows, so we are forced to file a lawsuit.”

According to the Gazette, the companies named in the lawsuit are Knutson Construction and Cupples Construction. Cupples is based in Normal, Illinois, and Knutson in Iowa City.
