Steve Simoff is 61 and lives in tiny Davis City, Iowa. To support himself and his family, he holds down a $9-an-hour job as the overnight janitor at Lakeside Casino in Osceola. Problem is, Osceola is 35 miles away, and Simoff can’t afford enough gas to drive the round trip. So Simoff frequently walks to work--even in calf-high snow--leaving at 3:30 p.m. in order to make his 11 o’clock shift. Sometimes an acquaintance will recognize him and give him a lift, and he usually gets a ride home.

But he often hoofs it, and wears out a pair of shoes every two months, reports the Des Moines Register. “You’ve got to be able to support your family, and you’ve got to keep your job,“ he explains.
