Iowa is by no means a hotspot for rattlesnakes. I've lived here my whole life, spent many days and night in the outdoors, and have never seen one. But that doesn't mean they aren't around! Here are a few spots in Eastern Iowa where you're most likely to run into a rattler!

Geode State Park

World Atlas reports that Geode State Park is on the southeatern border of Iowa and Illinois. It spans over 1,600 acres, including a huge lake great for boating and fishing. Surrounding that lake are hillly woodlands that can be a perfect hiding spot for rattlesnakes. Multiple visitors to the park have reportedly encountered the snakes, and according to World Atlas, are more active in warmer months for hunting and mating.

The Mississippi River

The mighty Mississippi makes up Iowa's eastern border. It also serves as a popular spot for one of the most common rattlesnakes in Iowa, the timber rattlesnake. The snakes prefer a wetter environment and the wetlands, swamps, and bogs near the Mississippi are pefect, according to World Atlas. You might also encounter the timber rattlers smaller cousin, the eastern  massasauga.

Maquoketa Caves State Park

Maquoketa Caves State Park, which covers 370 acres, is the largest concentration of caves in the state of Iowa. World Atlas points out that the caves, natural bluffs, and timber make for a great spot for rattlesnakes. Although they typically don't enter the caves, timber rattlesnakes will sometimes hide near the entrance in brush to try and ambush prey.

Pikes Peak State Park

World Atlas reports that Pikes Peak State Park spans over 1,000 acres. It over looks the Mississippi River, and features some of the biggest river bluffs in the state. The park is known to be ideal habbitat for timber rattlesnakes. In the winter, timber rattlers may even share a den with a black rat snake.
