With only a handful of weeks left in Iowa's high school football season, teams are pulling out all of the tricks and gadget plays as they fight for seeding heading into the playoffs.

This is one of the best parts about high school football, in my opinion. There are only so many trick plays you can get away with at the college level and even fewer in the NFL but when you have young teenagers battling it out on the gridiron, there's no limit to the creative freedom a team might have on offense.

Regina Catholic Education Center's high school football team ran one of the most fun trick plays you'll see this season, in their matchup last week against West Branch. The play they ran had a little bit of everything you want to see in a fun, well-executed trick play.

There's a little bit of mystery, which is pretty much required to run any trick play. The ball travels around the entire field, there's a moment when you raise your eyebrows, and you have no idea what's happening. Most importantly, the play ends in a touchdown. Anytime you combine those ingredients, you know you're in for a fun viewing experience.

The trick play begins at the 53-second mark of this clip. If you played football, at any level, did you run a play like this? If you're a fan of football, have you ever seen a play where the offensive linemen do what they did during this play? Regina introduces "The Sprawl."

KCRG caught up with Regina's Head Coach, Dustin Elsbury, and asked him about the play.

"We try to have fun with the kids and get creative with our trick plays. Kids love those plays."

Plays like this are definitely going to be more fun when they lead to touchdowns, which had to be the best part for the players. Trying something a little off-the-wall and it resulted in a score. The credit for the idea goes to another Regina coach, Ed Hinkel. He wouldn't give up the entire secret of where the idea came from but he did mention seeing a different version of this after the game. He told KCRG

"The best coaches are the best thieves. I saw a little version of it somewhere. Not going to give it away."

The only sad part about a trick play that has success is other teams have now seen it on tape and can prepare if they see something like this again. Will Regina use "The Sprawl" at any point again this season? Anything is possible but most likely it will look completely different.

Regina has a perfect record of 6-0 this season and will take on Beckman tomorrow (October 11) at 7:30 pm.
