"Blood is thicker than Hawkeyes, I'm sorry." 

One of the most fun football games of the entire year in the state of Iowa is the Cy-Hawk Football game.

Watching two teams who both represent the state of Iowa is such a fun moment in college football. The game is normally televised on national TV and college football fans from around the country get to enjoy this fun and unique matchup.

For Hawkeye fans, Saturday's game didn't end how they wanted it to. Iowa State came into Kinnick Stadium, and a redshirt freshman kicker, who is from Dubuque, sealed the deal for Iowa State. Kyle Konrardy made a 54 yard field goal with only 9 seconds left on the clock, to help Iowa State take home the Cy-Hawk Trophy.

While most Hawkeye fans would be bummed and frustrated after the loss, there's at least 1 Iowa Hawkeye season ticket holder that left Kinnick Stadium happy for Iowa State.

Blood is Thicker Than Hawkeyes

KCCI met up with Davenport native, John Brandt, before Saturday's matchup and there was something fairly interesting about his game attire for the day. He was wearing an Iowa Hawkeye polo shirt as well as an Iowa State Cyclone hat.

John has been an Iowa Hawkeye season ticket holder for the past 59 years. Since the 1960s, John has spent tons of Saturday's at Kinnick Stadium, cheering on the Black and Gold. This past Saturday, he divided up his Hawkeye fandom to root for his grandson, Gabe Burkle. Burkle is number 84 and plays tight end for the Cyclones.

While speaking to KCCI, John said he was pulling for both teams.

"You gotta pull for both. Blood is thicker than Hawkeyes, I’m sorry. I’ll be rooting for the Cyclones, I think, and it's going to be fun."

This is one of the best things about when sports mix with family. You can go your entire life cheering for one team and rooting against another and all of that can change in the blink of an eye.

After dedicating the last 59 years to Iowa Hawkeye football, this awesome grandfather was excited to watch his grandson play AGAINST his favorite team. Now that the game has passed, John can continue his devotion to the Hawkeyes. He'll likely continue cheering for the Hawkeyes in every game, for the rest of his life...except the 1 time each year they play against Iowa State, while his grandson attends the University.

Congratulations to Gabe Burke, his grandfather John, and the rest of Iowa State. As someone who isn't dedicated to either team, it was a fun game to watch as a fan of football.
