Not Today, Satan: April Fool’s Tweet Says Ferentz is ‘Stepping Down’

Some people just want to watch the world burn.

Or, maybe, every cornfield burn.

Someone woke up this morning, decided to masquerade as ESPN, and tweeted that head football coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Kirk Ferentz, was stepping down. On April Fool's Day.

All I have to ask is, WHY!?

Stuff like this happens every year with fake accounts, and it's become more of a regular thing, with accounts like this getting retweeted and shared from major, legitimate pages from time to time:

Some people still fall for it, which is amazing. Not everything you read on the internet is real, kids.

And just because a quote shows up on a graphic with a player's or coach's face on it doesn't assure you the phrase was said by that player or coach. It's 2022. Let's get with the program.

Luckily, no one is taking the Kirk bate. Some of the responses are pretty good, too.

So no, Ferentz is not leaving the Hawkeyes.

And thank God.

Ferentz is the winningest coach in Iowa football history (178 total) and has solidified himself as the longest-tenured head coach in the country, having led the program for 23 years.

The Michigan native has put together nine winning seasons in a row, along with wins in the Pinstripe, Outback, and Holiday Bowls. The Hawks are coming off another ten-win season, where they won the West Division and made another appearance in the Big Ten Championship game. We don't need to address how the game went.

His players have moved on and played in the NFL as well.

According to HawkFanatic.com, "Iowa has had 75 players selected in the NFL draft under Ferentz dating back to 2000, including 33 in the first three rounds, and 10 in both the first and second rounds. Iowa also had 18 players selected in the draft during a three-year stretch from 2010 to 2012."
