Overnight Storm Damage, Tornado in NE Iowa

Strong storms blew through Northeast Iowa Wednesday night and left behind considerable damage.

In Clayton County, damage was so extreme, that all traffic going in and out of McGregor is limited to local residents until further notice. Portions of buildings were blown down on Main Street, including a portion of city hall. A shelter has been set up at St. Mary's Catholic church in McGregor. In Winneshiek County, a tornado was reported near Fort Atkinson, but no one was injured, and no damages have been reported.

The storms last night moved across the Mississippi River into Southwest Wisconsin, where numerous trees and power lines were down in the city of Prairie du Chien. Electric crews are in the process of restoring power to the area.

Clayton County authorities have scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. this morning, in the parking lot of the Casino Queen in Marquette, to release more information on the overnight storm damage.

One person has been injured following last night's (July 19) storms in Northeast Iowa.

The Allamakee County sheriff's office received a report just before 6:30pm Wednesday of a barn that had been blown down near Waukon along Autumn Road, with someone trapped under the barn.

67-year-old Dennis Deal of Waukon was in the process of doing chores in the barn, when the structure was blown over by high thunderstorm winds. He was pinned beneath the barn.

Deal was found by First Responders, and taken to the Waukon Hospital for treatment; his condition was not known.
