The Iowa football program has sent another offensive lineman to the National Football League, in the first round.

Thursday night was a good night for offensive linemen who played their college football in the state of Iowa. Just six picks after UNI's Trevor Penning was selected by the New Orleans Saints with the 19th overall pick, it was Tyler Linderbaum's turn.

The native of Solon, Iowa who held down the center position on the offensive line for the Iowa Hawkeyes was taken 25th overall by the Baltimore Ravens.

Linderbaum, who was named the nation's best center by winning the Rimington Trophy, will be headed to a team that had a great history with another Hawkeye lineman... Marshall Yanda.

Yanda, who played high school football at Anamosa, played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Ravens and was selected for eight Pro Bowls. Baltimore won the Super Bowl over San Francisco in 2013 with Yanda on the O-line. Linderbaum is already being called the next Marshall Yanda by some Ravens fans.

After announcing the pick of Linderbaum (#65 above), Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said, "You're talking about one of the best technicians--strong, physical, tough, quick-footed." Meanwhile, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said he believes Linderbaum will "come in and start."

Linderbaum is the fifth Iowa Hawkeye offensive lineman that's been selected in the first round of the NFL draft in the last 13 seasons. Here are the other four:

  • Bryan Bulaga (2010)
  • Riley Reiff (2012)
  • Brandon Schreff (2015)
  • Tristan Wirfs (2019)

As day two of the 2022 NFL Draft beckons, a number of former Hawkeyes are hoping to hear their names called. Defensive back Dane Belton and running back Tyler Goodson have the best chances of being drafted while cornerback Matt Hankins, safety Jack Koerner, offensive lineman Kyler Schott, kicker Caleb Shudak, and defensive end Zach VanValkenburg will likely sign free-agent deals.
