Throughout the years, the one constant in the Terminator franchise has been Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even after director James Cameron quit the franchise, Schwarzenegger kept on chugging along, appearing in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machine, Terminator Genisys, and even having his likeness pop up in Terminator Salvation while he was still the governor of California. So with the news that James Cameron would be taking the helm of the franchise again after Genisys flopped, fans have been wondering if the actor had one last showing in him as everyone’s favorite compassionate death machine.

I am of the opinion that Arnold Schwarzenegger is currently making the most interesting movies of his career. Not necessarily the best or more satisfying on a visceral level; the most thoughtful, the most rich with themes and ideas, the most clearly made to comment upon and play with his image as the biggest action hero of the ’80s and ’90s. And while I really enjoy movies like Sabotage, Maggie, and Aftermath, they are much darker and more introspective films than Arnold used to make; in the last couple years, he hasn’t had much of a chance to flex his comedic muscles in exactly the same way.

There have been a lot of rumors swirling in recent weeks about the state of The Terminator franchise. First there was word that Paramount had removed a possible sixth Terminator (and a direct sequel to 2015’s Terminator Genisys) from its schedule. Then the head of Skydance, who holds the rights to the characters, said in an interview that a major announcement about the series’ future was coming some time this year. So what’s the truth?

We’ll never know how Schwarzenegger’s takeover of The Celebrity Apprentice might have succeeded on its own merits, as the results of the 2016 election held a dark cloud over anything bearing Trump’s name. That shade appears to have gotten to Schwarzenegger as well, as the ex-Governator apparently won’t return for another season, citing its toxic association.
