Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith was killed during the April 9 confrontation.

The suspect was taken into custody Wednesday after he was released from the hospital.

Sgt. Smith, a 27-year veteran of the Iowa State Patrol, had been stationed out of the District 10 office in Oelwein since 1996.

He's just the second member of the Iowa State Patrol to be shot and killed in the line of duty.
