More tornados ripped through north-central Iowa yesterday, and by some miracle, no one was injured or killed.

According to KIMT, "buildings were flattened and debris is aplenty in the southern part of Mason City." It added that the following areas had extensive damage or were destroied:

  • Near the Recycling Center and A1 Storage
  • Buildings and homes on 35th street
  • Eastbrooke neighborhood

It wasn't just the Mason City area, though.

According to KCRG, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclomation for seven counties in the Hawkeye State.

The counties are:

  • Cerro Gordo
  • Hancock
  • Humboldt
  • Mitchell
  • Pocahontas
  • Winneshiek
  • Worth

In the case of a disaster proclomation, it "allows state resources to be utilized to help the counties with disaster recovery and relief, and activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program for qualifying residents."

KCRG adds that the "program provides up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level for a family of three. ... The grants may be used for home or car repair, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses."

The application and instructions can be found on the Iowa Department of Human Services website. Applicants have 45 days from the date of the proclomation to submit their claim(s).

The Disaster Case Management Program is also instituded, "which was created to provide guidance and advice to people with serious needs related to disaster-related hardship."

Case managers work with people to develop recovery plans and refer the victims to receive services or resources. In order to receive help from the Disaster Management Program, one may contact the local community action association or visit www.iowacommunityaction.org.
