It was another deadly weekend in Waterloo after one person was killed in a shooting on Saturday according to Waterloo Police. This is the city's seventh homicide in 2022, and the second-weekend homicide in a row.

One person charged after Saturday homicide

KCRG reports the shooting Saturday happened just after noon in an apartment at 226 Palmer Drive. After 911 was called, police located 26-year-old Cortavius Benford who had a single gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead.

A short time later, police arrested 23-year-old Savion Wilson, and charged him with first-degree murder according to the report. Wilson is being held at the Black Hawk County Jail on a $1 million bond.

KWWL reports Wilson was already out on bond after being charged on August 4 after he fled from officers who were attempting to arrest him. He had 42 grams of marijuana on him at the time of his arrest. Police said they were packaged to be sold.

Last week on Sunday, 32-year-old Johnnie Murrell Rose was killed in a shooting on the block of West 5th St.

Earlier this month it was reported that Waterloo's Chief of Police Joel Fitzgerald had resigned from his position and accepted a job in Colorado. Fitzgerald had flirted with leaving the Waterloo PD several times since joining the force back in 2020.

At the time of his resignation, Fitzgerald was making an annual salary of $165,000, making him the highest-paid Police Chief in Waterloo city history.
