The City of Cedar Falls and the University of Northern Iowa are coming together for what will hopefully become an annual tradition in the college town, Fireworks Over the Dome.

Cedar Falls' new mayor hopes to spark a new tradition

Fireworks Over the Dome will be on Thursday, June 27th and, as the name implies, the display will go off near the UNI-Dome on the UNI campus. If that date stands out to any Cedar Fallsian, it's likely because you're thinking of Sturgis Falls, right? Yep! These fireworks would be an official kick-off to the annual celebration that immortalizes the city using its original name.

According to a press release from the city, bringing an annual fireworks celebration to Cedar Falls was a major goal for Mayor Danny Laudick, who just began his first term in January.

Describing his desire to bring a fireworks celebration to the city, Mayor Laudick said,

In Cedar Falls, we pride ourselves on being a community with a small-town sense of connection.

The display will be the first fireworks show at the UNI-Dome in over 10 years. Mayor Laudick, a 2013 UNI grad, says even though the fireworks are essentially a Sturgis Falls kick-off, there will be more than "a splash" of Panther pride during the celebration as well.

By teaming with UNI for the fireworks, the school hopes that alumni who may have left the Cedar Valley will return to celebrate and enjoy time back at their old stomping grounds in Cedar Falls.
