Steve McGraw has built an impressive resume during his 46-year Hall-of-Fame career. The veteran Waterloo East High School boys basketball coach is about to add another milestone to a long list of accomplishments.

McGraw will become only the fourth boys basketball coach in Iowa high school history to coach 1,000 career games. Barring a postponement, he'll reach the milestone Friday night when the Trojans host Dubuque Senior at East's Fred J. Miller Gymnasium.

According to the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), only three other men have coached 1,000 games. Fred Parsons (Van Buren of Keosauqua) has been involved in the most (1,304), while all-time career-wins leader Bob Hilmer (North Linn) coached his 1,254th game Tuesday night. Al Marshall (Cascade) retired in 2016, ending a 47-year coaching career that included 1,065 games.

After McGraw, the next closest on the list is Jim Squires, who retired in 2017 after coaching 983 games at Marquette Catholic of Bellevue (42 years) and Beckman Catholic of Dyersville (2 years).

McGraw has spent the majority of his career at East, where he has guided 13 teams to the state tournament. Under his leadership, the Trojans have won two state titles (1990 and 2003) and finished as runners-up three times. East has had four other final four teams with McGraw at the helm.

The Indianola native began his coaching career at Tri-County of Thornburg and also coached one season at Clarksville. Currently in his 36th season at East, McGraw's career record stands at 629-370 entering Friday's game against the Rams.

School officials plan to recognize the milestone during a pregame ceremony that will begin at approximately 7:15 PM. They are encouraging former players, coaches, colleagues and fans to be in attendance.
