Cy-Hawk Series Renewed Two More Seasons
Iowa & Iowa State have agreed to continue their annual football rivalry through at least 2023.
According to HawkeyeSports.com, the joint announcement was made Tuesday by Iowa's Director of Athletics Gary Barta, and Jamie Pollard, Iowa State's A.D. Whether or not to keep Iowa State on the schedule has been a hot topic among Hawkeye fans the past few seasons, but the two schools agreed to keep it going for the near future.
Iowa holds a 42-22 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to 1894. The Hawkeyes defeated the Cyclones 42-3, last season at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa State hosts this year's matchup on September 9th.
There aren't a lot of "true" rivalries in college athletics anymore, and even though I don't root for either team, I think it's a tradition worth keeping. The students definitely seem to get up for the game and trash talk the opposing school, and the winning players love to have the bragging rights. Last year being the exception, the Iowa/Iowa State game is usually very competitive and is a good way for both the Hawks & Cyclones to get national coverage early in the season.
