Details Released on Harrowing Shootings at Des Moines High School

Yesterday, six juveniles were all charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 15-year-old outside a Des Moines high school. We now know more details about what happened.

The shootings of three teenagers by another group of teenagers happened at around 3 p.m. on Monday outside Des Moines East High School, home to nearly 2,100 students.

KCCI in Des Moines says that court documents show that at least 35 shots were fired by a group of teens in three different vehicles toward some students who were in front of the school. 15-year-old Jose Lopez, who wasn't a student at Waterloo East, was killed. A 16-year-old girl and 18-year-old girl were both injured. The 18-year-old remains in critical condition, while the younger girl remains in serious condition.

According to surveillance video and footage from residential cameras, the three vehicles left the same address on 23rd Street before driving past the three who were outside the school. They turned around, and began firing at the group as they drove by the second time. KCCI reports the court documents say that all three vehicles then returned to the address on 23rd Street.

The Des Moines Police Department has estimated 35 shots were fired at the group standing outside Des Moines East. Officers and police investigators found 15 shell casings in the vehicles of the suspects and another 20 or so at the scene.

Six minors, all from Des Moines, were apprehended on Monday. Early Tuesday, the Des Moines Police Department announced that all six had been charged with first-degree murder. They've been identified as Manuel Buezo (16), Nyang Chamdual (14), Octavio Lopez (17), Alex Perdomo (15), Romero Perdomo (16), and Henry Valladares-Amaya (17).
