Merely weeks ahead of his inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump is using his legal campaign against multiple media outlets, including one of the biggest newspapers in Iowa.

At the core of Trump's move to sue The Des Moines Register is J. Ann Selzer, a renowned pollster and her polling firm. The Des Moines Register and its parent company Gannett are in the crosshairs of Trump, although not for what you might assume.

This case alleges violations of the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act, which prohibits deception when advertising or selling specific merchandise, per CNN. Despite winning the 2024 election handedly, Trump alleges that news coverage of Selzer's poll — published in the days leading up to the election showing Kamala Harris with a significant lead in the state of Iowa — was intended to artificially assist the Democrats.

This case comes after Trump won a $16 million payout from ABC News in a defamation case that he and the news organization settled this weekend. Trump and his legal team have been targeting media outlets in recent weeks, and despite the proposed action against her and her company, Selzer didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Selzer's firm, Selzer & Company (based in Des Moines), conducted a poll at the end of October based on telephone interviews with 808 Iowa voters. The poll found Harris with 47% support and Trump with 44%, a shocking report given Trump was universally expected to win Iowa without difficulty:

Defendants and their cohorts in the Democrat Party hoped that the Harris Poll would create a false narrative of inevitability for Harris in the final week of the 2024 Presidential Election. Instead, the November 5 Election was a monumental victory for President Trump in both the Electoral College and the Popular Vote, an overwhelming mandate for his America First principles, and the consignment of the radical socialist agenda to the dustbin of history - Trump's attorneys, per CNN

As if the current political sphere wasn't difficult enough to follow, Trump's many lawsuits against media outlets will have its own chapter in the current climate. Read more about the incoming president's lawsuit against The Des Moines Register on CNN's website.
