Two young children, a firefighter, and an adult male were injured in an early morning house fire Sunday in Waterloo.

Officials said the children were trapped inside the burning home and firefighters rescued them through a bedroom window shortly after they arrived at the scene. According to Waterloo Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Ben Petersen, the 2-year-old and 3-year-old girls were both taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

The fire broke out around 12:45 AM at 2646 E. Fourth St. Officials said the one-and-a-half story home sustained significant fire and smoke damage, which they estimated at around $25,000.

Petersen said a firefighter and a man who escaped the home were both transported to a hospital with injuries. The firefighter was treated for minor injuries and released. Officials didn't release the extent of the man's injuries.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately determined.
