Friday the 13th Asteroid Breaks Record for the Closest to Earth — We Didn’t Notice it Until the Next Day
On Friday, November 13, Asteroid 2020 VT4 zoomed by Earth just 328 miles above the Pacific Ocean, making it the closest asteroid to pass Earth without disintegrating in Earth's atmosphere. It passed at about the same height as the orbit of the International Space Station.
Asteroid 2020 VT4 is estimated to be between 16 and 36-feet in diameter and scientists didn’t even notice it until AFTER it zipped by Earth. It sped by our planet at a speed of over 30,000 MPH.
2020 VT4 is the 91st known asteroid to flyby the distance between Earth and the Moon since the start of the year and the sixth so far this month.
