Fayette County authorities have filed charges in a case involving a boat stolen from Lake Oelwein.

Authorities have charged 18-year-old Cole Cannon of Hawkeye and a 16-year-old juvenile from Oelwein in connection with the crime. Canon was charged with third-degree theft and third-degree criminal mischief. The 16-year-old was referred to juvenile court for third degree theft.

The boat was reported stolen to Fayette County sheriff's officials on Sept. 29. Cannon and the juvenile allegedly took the boat and items in the boat off of Lake Oelwein during the evening of Sept. 28.

Officials said the boat was later destroyed and dumped near Festina. Deputies later found and recovered the remains of the boat.

According to sheriff's officials, the public played a major role in the investigation. They said video footage and other tips helped them solve the case.
