It's a controversial topic to say the least. The argument for legal recreational marijuana usage falls into two categories; You're either for it, or against it. What isn't controversial, however, is the amount of money that the new dispensaries have produced. In the first month of sales, the dispensaries in Illinois have generated $7.3 million in cannabis tax revenue, also having sold nearly $40 million in recreational pot. An additional $3.1 million was generated in retail sales tax revenue.

Illinois governor, J.B. Pritzker, has projected that sales would generate $28 million in tax revenue for the remainder of the fiscal year 2020, which ends in June.  Illinois officials estimate that as the industry matures, marijuana sales will grow to $127 million in the fiscal year 2021.
