An Illinois man is facing a hate crime charge in connection with an incident that occurred during a recent protest in Waterloo.

According to a Waterloo police press release, 54-year-old Gary Shelton is charged with second-degree criminal mischief. He's accused of writing "KKK" on a black woman's car on June 5.

The victim gave a date, time and location where the incident was believed to have occurred. Waterloo police said investigators obtained a video and other evidence that led them to issue a warrant for Shelton's arrest.

Shelton was taken into custody Wednesday in Bloomington, Ill. His bond was set at $75,000.

The woman told police that someone wrote KKK on her vehicle, using a waxy substance that couldn't be wiped away. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at more than $1,500.
