Cedar Rapids Man Among Those Killed in Weekend Accidents in Iowa

At least three Iowans were killed in separate accidents over the weekend, continuing a very deadly year on Iowa roadways.

Eastern Iowa Woman Struck and Killed Following Accident

A 68-year-old Iowa woman was killed in a second accident after her vehicle was involved in a collision with a deer on southbound Highway 61 near mile marker 148, in Clinton County.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 68-year-old Cheryl Neilson of Delmar was in a 2020 Ford Escape that collided with a deer just after 5:20 p.m. on Friday, November 17. It's not clear if she was the driver or passenger in the vehicle, but we know she was traveling with her husband Cliff at the time.

The vehicle that the Neilsons were in was disabled by striking the deer and was in one of the northbound lanes of traffic. The Neilsons exited their vehicle, and a 2012 Chevy Silverado pickup struck Cheryl and their Ford Escape.

The pickup went into the west ditch along Highway 61, and the Escape ended up in the median.

Cheryl Neilson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Silverado was injured and transported to a Dubuque hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.

Cheryl Neilson co-owned 61 Kartway in Delmar with her husband, Cliff. The website for the business announced her passing and said the couple was "en route to the yearly track banquet to celebrate with drivers and friends" at the time of the incident.

Cedar Rapids Man May Have Suffered Medical Incident Before Crash

A 21-year-old Cedar Rapids man was killed Friday evening, November 17, when his vehicle went off Highway 30 and collided with railroad property.

According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Nicholas Pearson's vehicle left the highway near 21st St S.W. just after 6:20 p.m. His vehicle then struck railroad property. Police said, "Preliminary indications suggest Pearson may have suffered a medical incident which led to losing control of the vehicle."

Pearson, a 2021 Cedar Rapids Prairie graduate, passed away at the scene despite life-saving efforts by first responders.

North Central Iowa Man Killed Early Sunday Morning

A Webster City man was killed in a one-vehicle accident at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 19.

The Iowa State Patrol says a Wright County Sheriff's Deputy observed a 2012 Mercedes GL450 SUV driving erratically on Iowa Highway 17 in Eagle Grove, in Wright County.

When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled, reaching speeds up to 130 miles per hour. The driver was unable to negotiate a curve and his vehicle went into the ditch.

The driver, 36-year-old Jose Casiano of Webster City, died at the scene. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Deadly Year Continues on Iowa Roads

Through Sunday, November 19, 330 people have been killed on Iowa roads this year. There were 337 killed in all of 2022.
