Spooky Heatwave: Eastern Iowa Braces for a Warmer-Than-Usual Halloween!
It's the season of ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and... jackets. Well, normally at least a light jacket, right?
While we have had a hard freeze and it's been chilly at night, we're in the midst of a warmer-than-average autumn in Eastern Iowa.
But will Halloween be scary warm? It's a little too early to know for sure, but that Magic 8 Ball seems to say "Signs point to yes".
Halloween Early Forecast Predictions
As I write this, it's Tuesday, October 22. Over a full week before Thursday, October 31, AKA Halloween. Obviously, Halloween is an evening/nighttime holiday, and it's always cooler at night.
With that in mind, the early forecasters are calling for a high in Eastern Iowa (using Cedar Rapids as my location, but Waterloo was nearly identical). Our weather friends at KCRG-TV 9 are predicting a high on Halloween of 62 degrees, with a low of 40.
Weather.com's 10-day outlook also shows a similar result, a high of 61 with the same 40 predicted low.
The only really wild departure from these predictions is my own iPhone stock weather app which has the high in Cedar Rapids listed as a whopping 72 degrees. Yet, the low is about on par with the others.
No matter who's early prediction you go with, it will be MUCH warmer than last year. In case you don't recall, our high was about 38 in Eastern Iowa in 2024. Our low won't even get that low if these forecasts are accurate. This means your kiddo can likely wear their costume with little need for extra layers.
As far as the above-average trend, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or the more palatable acronym, NOAA, says it will stay warm.
They're calling for "leaning above" average temps next month.
Still predicted to be a snowy winter, sometimes those warmer temps actually bring more snow. After all, when it's -27, it's really hard to get a lot of wet, heavy snow, right?
Enjoy the Halloween season, and maybe a scenic Iowa drive?
