Iowa Man Who Assaulted Officer on January 6th Sentenced To Prison

An Iowa man who assaulted a police officer at the U.S. Capital on January 6th, 2021 has been sentenced to one of the longest terms of any of the nearly 260 convicted rioters.

The Des Moines Register reports that Kyle Young, a 38-year-old heating and air conditioning technician from Redfield, Iowa, was sentenced on Tuesday to more than seven years in federal prison for his role in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capital. In handing down her ruling, Judge Amy Berman Jackson called Young's actions "some of the darkest acts committed on one of our nation's darkest days."

According to the Register, Young's sentence which was recommended by federal prosecutors is the fourth longest of anyone sentenced so far in the January 6th riots. Young pleaded guilty back in May to assaulting, resisting, and impeding a police officer. He is one of several people to be charged in the assault of D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone. The Register reports that Fanone was dragged into the crowd, beaten, and shocked with a stun gun while defending one of the entrances to the U.S. Capital.

Young is one of eight Iowans to be charged so far with taking part in the January 6th riot. He is the second to be sentenced. The Register reports that just last week, Doug Jensen of Des Moines, was found guilty on seven charges for his role in the attack. Sentencing on his five felonies and two misdemeanors are scheduled for December 16th.
