Iowa Women Complete Cinderella Run To Soccer Title [VIDEO]
While Iowa Hawkeye fans fret over how many points their favorite football can or can't score, another Iowa team completed an amazing championship run on Sunday, and brought home a Big Ten title!
The Iowa women's soccer team entered the Big Ten tournament as the #8 seed. They faced a tough, uphill battle to say the least. The Hawkeye's first-round opponent was #1 seed Michigan State. Iowa topped the Spartans. Next up was the #4 seed Penn State Nittany Lions. Again, Iowa advanced. Sunday, it was the #3 seed and neighbors to the north the Wisconsin Badgers. This match would be for the Big Ten Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA women's soccer tournament. The Daily Iowan pointed out that the Hawkeyes were the lowest seed to make the tournament final since 2005.
Only one goal was scored and it was off the foot of Iowa midfielder Josie Durr on a penalty kick.
It was Iowa's only shot on goal the entire day, compared to eight for the Badgers. But Iowa's lone shot went in, and the Iowa women's soccer team became the first #8 seed to ever win the Big Ten Tournament. The Daily Iowan reports that it is Iowa's second Big Ten title in four years as they also beat Wisconsin 1-0 in 2020-21.
Several Iowa players made the Big Ten All-Tournament team including Samantha Cary, Macy Enneking, and Kelli McGroarty. Cary was also named the Defensive Player of the Tournament. The Hawkeyes will find out when and where they play in the NCAA women's soccer tournament during the selection show later today. LET'S GO HAWKS!
