In the words of Courtlin, "the thicker the crust, the closer to God." To quote another co-worker, simply "blasphemy", when discussing a new survey that reveals Iowa's "most popular pizza."

Apparently, the rest of Iowa didn't get the memo.

Iowa's most popular pizza is random

The first caveat is that it doesn't really define the criteria for "favorite pizza". Crust? Toppings? The restaurant where the pizza is made? Apparently, it's all fair game.

Four places picked Hawaiian. Yes, the kind with pineapple on it. There is no debate, pineapple does not belong on pizza. It's such a crazy concept, even Hawaii didn't pick it. Looking at the results on a map, which came from the pizza app Slice, you can see how varied it is.

Taking a look at just the midwest states, you can see two picked "Hawaiian" as their choice. North Dakota and Missouri. Oregon and Ohio were the other two.

Eww.

From there, we see where having standard criteria would have helped.

Sicilian:

  • New York
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • Delaware
  • West Virginia
  • Florida
  • Nevada
  • Arizona
  • New Mexico

Deep Dish:

  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • Wisconsin
  • Michigan
  • Indiana
  • Georgia
  • Maine
  • Alaska

Veggie:

  • California
  • Washington
  • Montana
  • Idaho
  • Mississippi
  • Vermont
  • Nebraska (we thought we knew our neighbors better)

Supreme:

  • Tennessee
  • Arkansas
  • Louisiana
  • Oklahoma
  • Kansas
  • Texas
  • Wyoming

Meat Lovers:

  • North Carolina

See what I mean? some picked a crust, others a topping combination. No rhyme or reason.

For the record, Iowa's favorite pizza is "thin crust". Doctor it up a bit and it's fine, but let's be honest, we may have our preferences, but in reality, it all sounds amazing.
