As it's been quite apparent from all of my recent posts, my family and I took a trip to Western Iowa and into Omaha, Nebraska. For a short vacation, it was just the recharge we needed. We explored the Loess Hills (photos to come), the Omaha zoo (photos here), the Desoto National Wildlife Refuge (photos to come), and the topic of this article, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian bridge.

Have you ever strolled across a bridge that spans not just a river but also state lines?

If not, then you're in for a treat with Omaha's very own Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. It's not just a crossing; it's an experience that blends modern design, breathtaking views, and a touch of history. It can also make you feel just a wee bit nauseous or unsteady, with the swaying and slight movements of the bridge.

First off, let's talk design. Picture this: an elegant, s-shaped silhouette stretching gracefully across the "Big Muddy" Missouri River, with two towering 200-foot pillars rising proudly on either side. This cable-stayed marvel is not just functional but a work of art, inviting pedestrians and cyclists alike to traverse its 3,000-foot span.

But what really sets the Bob Kerrey Bridge apart are its lights. These programmable LEDs turn the bridge into a nightly spectacle. As dusk falls, the bridge transforms, bathing the river in a mesmerizing array of colors. It's a sight to behold, and if you're lucky enough to catch it during one of its light shows, you're in for a real treat. We didn't get to see it this time around, but you can imagine walking under a canopy of vibrant hues, with the gentle hum and reflection of the river below.

And speaking of experiences, did you know you can literally have one foot in Nebraska and the other in Iowa? Plaques marking the state line are a quirky reminder of the bridge's unique position, connecting not just cities but entire states. It's a fun fact to share with friends as you snap selfies against the backdrop of the Omaha skyline.

But the bridge isn't just about aesthetics; it's also a practical link between communities. Future plans for expanding on the Iowa side of the bridge include a planned Tree Top Walk (2025), Adventure Tower (2025), a Pier (TBD), and a Dog Park (TBD).

On the Nebraska side you can check out Omar and his troll dwelling. You can also rent bikes and scooter to cover the short trip between states. From the Port of Omaha's Miller Landing to Council Bluffs' Renaissance Center, it provides access to a network of trails and parks, inviting you to explore the beauty of both cities.

So, whether you're a local looking for a scenic stroll or a visitor seeking a memorable experience, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge has something for everyone. Next time you find yourself in Omaha, don't miss the chance to cross this architectural gem and witness the magic for yourself. I'll keep adventuring in the meantime to give you more options on your next trip or vacation. Speaking of which, have you been to the Omaha Zoo lately?
