[LISTEN] The 100 Best-Selling Songs Since 1990
Hard to believe that 1990 was almost THIRTY years ago. When I think back to music from, say, 10 years ago, I think it's stuff from 1997 or something. And while musical tastes and genres may have evolved over the years, fans have always found a way to get their favorite songs onto their playlists.
A co-worker passed this list on to me, and I was actually surprised at a lot of the singles that made the cut.
No surprise, many of pop's biggest names appear in this compilation--Katy Perry, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, just to name a few--but it also includes iconic songs from Nirvana, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, as well. This covers quite a bit ground; ballads, EDM, rock, Latin, and even a few one-hit wonders were included.
I knew ALL of these songs except seven. You probably will remember most of them, too...for better or worse. This list includes digital AND physical sales.*
What I find remarkable about this list is that back in the '90s..."digital" music wasn't a thing. Nobody downloaded songs. There was no online shopping. Heck, most homes didn't even HAVE internet until the latter part of the decade. That means you actually had to go to a record store (remember those?) and physically purchase a CD or cassette (remember those?). And we had to do it by walking three miles in the snow, uphill both ways.
*This list was compiled back in 2016, so some of the entries have undoubtedly changed (I'm certain that "Despacito" would be added if you did this list today. Or pretty much anything by Drake).
