A man from Clearfield, Utah, told police his second thoughts about his girlfriend moving in with him caused him to act a little bit irrationally, which is why he was arrested.

On April 25th, Clearfield firefighters were called to a mobile home that had caught fire. When questioned by Clearfield Police, the owner of the mobile home told them "he knew exactly how the fire started, explaining that he had started the fire."

Jordan James Berghout, 29, said his girlfriend was planning on moving in, but "things with her had not been going well lately," according to an affidavit. He said that he figured "that if he burned down his house, he would no longer have to worry about his girlfriend moving into the home."

To start the fire, prosecutors said to start the fire, Berghout "sprayed (the) drapes with automotive cleaner and lit them on fire. The fire caused significant damage to his residence as well as the residence next to his trailer."

The residence next to Berghout's trailer has a family of four living there, who have been displaced by the fire.

Berghout also told police he had a methamphetamine addiction, and "admitted that he hears voices, and the voices have previously told him to physically harm himself or others," the affidavit reads.
