Walter Palmer is a wealthy dentist and avid hunter from suburban Minneapolis who spent $55,000 on a trip to Zimbabwe recently. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, Mr. Palmer has sparked international outrage after being identified as the person who killed a famous lion named Cecil in Zimbabwe by luring Cecil out of a national park using food, shooting her (her!) with a crossbow and then killing her (it was a girl lion!) with a gun, before proceeding to skin and behead her.

This is Cecil.

Palmer -- who illegally shot a black bear in Wisconsin seven years ago -- issued a statement on Tuesday. “I hired several professional guides, and they secured all proper permits,” the statement read. “To my knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled. I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt. I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt.”

However, droves of people have taken to his dental practice’s Yelp and Facebook pages to berate him. Celebrities have set their Twitter feeds to "blast":

Meanwhile, police in Zimbabwe say Palmer may face poaching charges and have already arrested the two people he worked with on the hunting trip.
