One member of the Iowa legislature has been pushing to make psychedelic mushrooms legal to use for Iowans. Recreational drug use has been a hot button issue across the country, but the use of psilocybin, which is the chemical found in mushrooms finally reached the Iowa House floor.

According to the psilocybin website, it is classified as a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance in Iowa. Apparently, these specific types of mushroom spores do not have any psilocybin spores, which makes them legal to be bought and sold in 47 of the 50 states.

Iowa Representative Jeff Shipley has been leading the way on this bill for some time, but it has been canned for the time being.

According to Iowa Code Ann. Section 124.203, which classifies psilocybin as a Controlled Dangerous Substance, this drug is categorized in similar circles to more hardcore drugs. Those that are found in possession of this drug could get fines or even a prison sentence.

Those legislatures in opposition to this bill would like to gain more knowledge about the drug trials. They are also leaning towards waiting until psilocybin is cleared for medical use on a federal level.
