Stephen Colbert Shout Outs Iowa Bakery
It's always nice for a local business to get a national shout-out. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert focused in on an Iowa bakery just last week.
Small businesses are bearing the weight of the economic struggle that the country has been put through Colbert is on a mission to help out small businesses and give them a bit of a boost in his segment called the Colbert Small Biz Bump.
The very first business that he dropped a mention of was Cedar Rapids' own Shawnniecakes. The sweet treat store is owned by LeShawn Smith and her family who have been baking for years.
Shawnnie and her mother spent years baking for other people and taking a few classes so they could feel confident to give this venture a go. As reported by the Gazette, the bakery opened back in 2009. Its original name was Shawnniecakes and Mama Pearl's Specialty Treats. The original operation was done out of Shawnnie's own personal kitchen.
She ended up selling her baked goods at different shops at the NewBo City Market. This single mention had the store sold out of two days worth of product, as reported by Iowa News Now.
This really shows the type of good you can do on the national stage for our local businesses. You can see Colbert mention the bakery in the video down below.
