If the Buffalo Bills had elected to squib kick to the Kansas City Chiefs with 13 seconds left in regulation on Sunday, we wouldn't be having this conversation. But they didn't. Instead, the kickoff landed out of the endzone, taking zero seconds off the clock. I get it. 13 seconds shouldn't be enough time for Patrick Mahomes to get his team into field goal range. But this is the NFL in 2022. And it turns out its plenty of time. So then we head to overtime, and that my friends, is where the NFL has a problem.

Here are the official rules for overtime as stated by the National Football League.

Each team must possess, or have the opportunity to possess, the ball. The exception: if the team that gets the ball first scores a touchdown on the opening possession.

And how does the league determine which team gets the ball first? A coin toss. Needless to say, the team that wins the coin toss nearly always wins the game. Don't believe me? Take a look at this stat courtesy of the folks at ESPN.

Since the NFL changed to their current overtime policy in 2010, every time a game went into OT, the team that won the coin toss won the game 9 out of 10 times. That is a pretty damning statistic. I, like many, propose that the NFL switch to the overtime rules that college football uses. In college, each team is given an offensive possession in overtime. After the second overtime, teams are required to go for two after a TD. The NFL could seamlessly implement this policy and most players would be familiar with it having more than likely experienced it while in college.

But many will still point out that teams like Buffalo had numerous chances to step up and stop Kansas City during regulation, and they aren't wrong. But it's time for the NFL to bow to the fans. Change the overtime rules so it is fair and even for both teams. And please let Buffalo in on what a squib kick is.
