Even if these phrases are true, you could put your job at risk saying them.

If you want to keep your job, you have to watch your mouth in the office. We don't mean swearing even though that is ill-advised. Our friends are Monster.com have complied a list of things that you should never EVER say to your boss.

9. "Let me set you up with..."

You might think that this puts you on a personal level with your boss, but it is more patronizing than anything else.

8. "But we've always done it this way."

New ideas are what keep businesses innovating and growing. When you complain about how it's been done, you look behind the times and negative.

7. "I don't know."

Your boss shouldn't expect you to know everything, but the phrasing of "I don't know" can be modified to "I'll find out right away."

6. "It's not my fault."

Explain to the best of your ability what happened. If it is your fault and you are just trying to get out of being in trouble ask, "What can I do to make it right?"

5. "But I emailed you about that last week."

Even if that's a true statement, it's your responsibility to stay on top of your workflow. If you are expecting a response to that email, follow up verbally or resend the email.

4. "I partied too hard last night. I'm so hung over."

Even if you have a boss that parties with everyone, just stay professional at all times. Pop an aspirin, drink a coffee, or do what you have to do to get the job done.

3. "I can't stand working with ____."

It's going to reflect bad on you when you complain about a another employee. If you are threatened or faced with illegal or unethical behavior, do tell HR. But if it's a personal grudge, deal with it, get the job done, and move on.

2. "That just isn't possible."

Focus on what can be done. If it truly isn't possible, show the evidence and let your boss determine it can't be done. Be a problem solver.

1. "I need a raise."

You may "need" a raise, but your boss doesn't "need" to give you one. You may ask for a salary negotiation where you can highlight your successes and even show hard data on what other people in your industry earn.
