Nearly a decade after a treasure chest estimated to be worth a millions of dollars was stashed away in the Rocky Mountains, it has finally been discovered.

In 2010, a 79-year-old art dealer named Forrest Fenn hid a treasure chest in the Rocky Mountains that contained pre-Columbian animal figurines, gold nuggets and coins, emerald rings, and much more.

His plan was to haul the treasure up into the mountains and die beside it after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1988, but miraculously, he recovered. But, he still hid the treasure and he gave out encrypted clues in a 24-line poem embedded in his memoir, ‘The Thrill of the Chase,’ and on his website. his only clues included a map and a poem. (A photo of the Treasure Map and poem can be seen HERE.)

Mr. Fenn (now 89-years-old) confirmed that the treasure was located and reported its finding on June 6, 2020. He said an anonymous searcher from the East Coast sent him a picture of the chest and provided enough specific details to know that it was legit.

So how much was the treasure worth? Well, for starters, he paid $25,000 just for the treasure chest! It’s said to have weighed a total of 42 pounds, containing approximately $1-2 million in treasure.

Thousands upon thousands of people searched for the treasure, some quit their jobs to dedicate their lives to finding it, and five people died looking for it – one death occurred as recently as March.

After it was found, Fenn said;

It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago. I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot.”
