UPDATE: Authorities Identify Hudson Accident Victim
Authorities have released the names of the drivers involved in a fiery head-on collision near Hudson Tuesday morning that left one person dead.
Hudson police identified the victim as 48-year-old Paul Kuehl of Hudson. The other driver was Eddie Veenstra of Otley.
Officials said a preliminary investigation revealed that Kuehl was driving a pickup southbound on Iowa Highway 58/Hudson Road and crossed the center line. His pickup collided head-on with an oncoming semi tractor-trailer, driven by Veenstra. The pickup burst into flames after the impact.
Authorities said officers found the pickup fully engulfed when they arrived at the scene. According to Hudson police, the burning pickup was facing north in the southbound lane and the jack-knifed semi was laying on its side blocking both lanes of traffic.
Tuesday's crash happened around 9 AM near the Strayer Road intersection just north of Hudson. The accident closed the highway between Hudson and Cedar Falls for several hours.
Investigators are trying to determine what caused Kuehl's pickup to cross the center line. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Department is leading the probe, with the assistance of Hudson Police.
Cedar Falls police, the Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement and Hudson Street and Public Works Departments assisted at the scene.
