In a previous vote, the Cedar Falls City Council decided to put a mask mandate on hold. At that time, the council voted 6-1. Yesterday, September 8, the council approved a mask mandate on a vote of 4-3. However, it came with some changed to the original proposal.

As the mandate was passed, it will apply to individuals 5-years and older. Prior, it was 2-years and older.

KWWL reports the mandate reads:

Every person in the City of Cedar Falls, Iowa must wear a face covering when:

  • In public, as opposed to one's place of residence, when one cannot stay six feet apart from others.
  • Inside any indoor public settings, including but not limited to grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, retail stores, other public settings that are not one's residence and when among people who do not live in the same household, and city buildings.
  • Outside if maintaining a distance of six feet apart is not possible.
  • Using public transportation or private car services.

With Cedar Falls passing a mask mandate, and Waterloo having passed one in August, the two largest cities population wise in Black Hawk County now have mask mandates. As we previously reported, the county is still looking to pass a mask mandate of its own.
