The Nebraska-Iowa football game has become a yearly holiday tradition, with both teams squaring off the Friday after Thanksgiving. The annual rivalry--known as the Heroes Game--will have an added meaning this season.

Veterans organizations representing both universities will work together to honor their fallen fellow military members. They're walking the game ball from Lincoln to Iowa City. Each participant will carry 22 pounds of weight to signify the estimated 22 veterans who commit suicide each day.

Drew Wherry, of University of Iowa Veterans Association, hopes the effort will bring veterans together from across the two states and create support networks for those who need it.

"We have over 200 volunteers, between Nebraska and Iowa to do this. It's really cool. It's a really awesome experience," Wherry told KCRG-TV.

Last year, for the first time, the UIVA spent about a week marching 280 miles from Minneapolis to Iowa City. This time, the UI veterans group will split the near 344-mile journey from Lincoln in half. Hawkeyes will grab the game ball from the Huskers group in Menlo, Iowa on Monday.
