An accident just north of Oelwein has put two people in the hospital, and resulted in charges against a Waterloo man.

It happened at about noon Sunday, at the intersection of Highway 150 and 50th street, about a mile north of Oelwein. A nortbound SUV driven by 76 year old Larry Werner of rural Oelwein, slowed to make a left turn, and was rear-ended by an SUV driven by 35 year old Joshua Berendes of Waterloo.

Werner and his passenger, his wife, 72 year old Carolyn, were taken to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, with unspecified injuries.

Berendes was not hurt; he is charged with failure to maintain a safe and assured clear distance.

Damages to the 2 vehicles was estimated at nearly $30,000.
