Waterloo Man Facing Charges After Police Standoff

Officials have identified a man who was involved in a three-hour standoff with Waterloo police this week.

Authorities said they arrested 70-year-old Greg Nelson for causing a disturbance and firing shots inside his apartment. Nelson was charged with two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a felon in possession of a firearm and assault on peace officers with a weapon.

Waterloo police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Walnut Court Apartments, 315 Walnut St., around 1:45 PM Wednesday. Officials said they attempted to make contact with Nelson after officers arrived, but he refused to respond to any orders. According to a news release, police heard gunshots coming from inside Nelson's apartment while they while they were trying to persuade him to come out.

Officers secured the area and closed off several blocks of city streets in the neighborhood surrounding the apartment complex. The Boys and Girls Club of the Cedar Valley, East High School and several businesses were placed on lockdown during the incident. The Waterloo Police Tactical Unit was activated to assist officers at the scene.

According to police, Nelson continued to fire a weapon from inside the apartment while officers continued to talk to him. Officers finally gained entry into Nelson's apartment around 5:45 PM and brought him out safely.

Nelson was taken to the a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
